Taboga Island

This charming historic island lies 20 kilometres south of Panama City. The island was discovered by the Spaniards in 1524 and served as the first deep-water port in the region - notably from here the ships of Francisco Pizarro started for the conquest of Peru.
The frequent pirate attacks forced the Spaniards to build the El Morro system of fortifications on the nearby island, which for three centuries held their service and in the XIX century served the headquarters of the "Pacific Steam Company." In 1882 the French Canal Company built the first sanatorium on Taboga , where the French painter Paul Gauguin used to live. Now Taboga, better known as "Island of Flowers", is famous for its beaches, the Observation platform by the walls of the old American military bunker on a hilltop Cerro Vikiya (300 m), a small church Taboga (XVI-XVII , is considered one of the oldest in Latin America ), a small array of tropical rain forest, replete with multiple hibiscus and bugenvilleey gardens, and its colony of brown pelicans, one of the largest in Latin America.
